DUBAI, U.A.E.: The United Arab Emirates responded to another Iranian missile barrage on May 8, hours after the U.S. and Iranian forces traded fire in the Strait of Hormuz.
The UAE's Defense Ministry said three people were injured when its air defenses tried to stop two missiles and three drones fired by Iran. It is not clear if all of them were destroyed. Officials warned people to stay away from any fallen pieces.
The U.S. said it stopped attacks on three Navy ships and hit Iranian military sites in the strait. Iran has mostly blocked this important route for global energy since the war began on February 28, causing fuel prices to rise and worrying global markets.
U.S. President Donald Trump downplayed the fighting, calling the strikes minor, but warned that the U.S. would start heavy bombing again if Iran does not agree to reopen the Strait and limit its nuclear program.
Iran's Foreign Ministry said the U.S. attacks broke the ceasefire.
The violence happened while the U.S. was waiting for Iran's response to peace talks. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he expects to hear from Iran soon and hopes for a serious proposal.
The U.S. military said it stopped Iranian attacks on its ships and hit the Iranian sites responsible. None of the ships was damaged.
Iranian media said its forces exchanged fire with the enemy on Qeshm Island and reported loud explosions and defensive fire in Tehran.
Iran also accused the U.S. of hostile actions against two oil tankers near its port of Jask and nearby coastal areas.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said his country is in continuous talks with both the U.S. and Iran to extend the ceasefire and reach peace.
At the same time, talks between Israel and Lebanon are set to restart next week in Washington. However, the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been unstable, with ongoing clashes in southern Lebanon.
